How Many Calories to Burn to Lose a Pound of Fat?
Since my goal is to lose 40 lbs in 40 weeks, 1 pound a week, I needed to figure out how many calories to burn to lose a pound of fat. There are roughly 3500 calories in a pound of fat. That means, if I reduce my intake by 3500 calories per week, I can expect to lose a pound each week. That's 500 calories per day.
I think this is a great starting point for me.
Even if you work out the exact amount it will do you little good. I found that cutting down on bad things one at a time and increasing the good at a similar rate helped. I guess you could use a fat binder (just been talking about them) but your best bet is to revamp your life style and review your poundage two to six weeks later after the end of the revamp.

Commented on December 6th, 2007Here comes the geek to spoil things for you. The numbers should be used only as a guide to scale rather than anything more reliable. Things such as metabolic rate, conversion of energy (sugars to fats) and other issues complicate things. If you were to work out (swim, run, jog, cycle, walk the dog, hike or something) for at least ten minuets everyday you would burn off 250 to 500 caleries. Bring your intake down to meet it say 250 in fats and sugars and you should find that your loss is greater than the number might indicate.
Remember it is easier to store as fat than use stored fat. Sugars and fats in our diet stand in the way of that convert process but being highly active burns the sugars and uses up the fats.
In theory a sufficiently active (and I mean sporty) person might need to consume twice the RDI of calories and fats to be healthy. Chat to your GP about it as I’m no medical expert but the theory I’ve been using has worked well for me and I still eat cake at tea time and a greasy takeout once every 14 days.
Commented on January 5th, 2008Thanks everyone for great comments. I’m really learning how my body works through so many sources. I’m cutting down on bad stuff one at a time, and I think that alone is doing some changes on my body. I’m not losing the weight rapidly, but I have more energy overall.
Commented on February 10th, 2008Have you ever consider Herbalife to help your problem
Commented on April 13th, 2008I was thinking 500 calories sounds a lot but then when I thought about it, its about the same as 2 chocolate eclaiers with cream in the middle.
Matts right you should also try and increase your metabolic rate through exercise.
Commented on April 30th, 2008That is a great starting point, but it would be much easier for you to lose weight if you did a combination of eating less calories and exercising like I talk about in my calories post. It sounds like you are starting in the right direction, though.
Commented on October 3rd, 2008I burn about 3500 calories a week but i eat about 6500 calories a week…i found it works but its tough going!
Commented on October 22nd, 2008The more I learn about weight loss, I realize that playing with only calories doesn’t work.
What I eat is one of the most important factors in weight loss, but there are more elements, like exercise and watching what kind of food I’m eating. Simply cutting 500 calories a day doesn’t work well.
@Cassie,
6,500 calories a week is about 1,000 calories a day. Don’t you think you are eating too little?
I also learned that eating too little actually hurt you. It might seem beneficial in a short term, but it will actually do more harm to your body. Don’t you think so?

I actually tried Herbalife. As a matter of fact, I used to be a distributor for 3 years.
Sorry, but after trying so many different diet pills, I found them waste of money. With the same money, I can buy great food and eat healthy, and lose weight :) Thanks for your suggestion though.
Commented on October 22nd, 2008it may seem that i dont eat alot but what i am eating consists of a breakfast, lunch and a good dinner. i have cut out all the crap that i eat but if i do fancy i bag of crisps(which is my weak point) then i go for the likes of quavers or weight watchers which are all low cal and low fat. thanks for the comment though.
Commented on October 23rd, 2008another theory to keep in mind, if you eat a big breakfast and start the day off full, youll be able to burn off breakfast through out the day and not feel the need to eat more. so eat alot at the beginning, and less through out the day while you are using what you start with.
