How Many Calories to Burn to Lose a Pound of Fat?
Since my goal is to lose 40 lbs in 40 weeks, 1 pound a week, I needed to figure out how many calories to burn to lose a pound of fat. There are roughly 3500 calories in a pound of fat. That means, if I reduce my intake by 3500 calories per week, I can expect to lose a pound each week. That’s 500 calories per day.
I think this is a great starting point for me.

Even if you work out the exact amount it will do you little good. I found that cutting down on bad things one at a time and increasing the good at a similar rate helped. I guess you could use a fat binder (just been talking about them) but your best bet is to revamp your life style and review your poundage two to six weeks later after the end of the revamp.
Posted on November 14th, 2007Those are the facts - but the body often doesn’t often comply. Just stick with it and don’t get frustrated if once in awhile the scale mishaves and doesn’t show a loss.
Posted on December 6th, 2007Here comes the geek to spoil things for you. The numbers should be used only as a guide to scale rather than anything more reliable. Things such as metabolic rate, conversion of energy (sugars to fats) and other issues complicate things. If you were to work out (swim, run, jog, cycle, walk the dog, hike or something) for at least ten minuets everyday you would burn off 250 to 500 caleries. Bring your intake down to meet it say 250 in fats and sugars and you should find that your loss is greater than the number might indicate.
Remember it is easier to store as fat than use stored fat. Sugars and fats in our diet stand in the way of that convert process but being highly active burns the sugars and uses up the fats.
In theory a sufficiently active (and I mean sporty) person might need to consume twice the RDI of calories and fats to be healthy. Chat to your GP about it as I’m no medical expert but the theory I’ve been using has worked well for me and I still eat cake at tea time and a greasy takeout once every 14 days.
Posted on January 5th, 2008Thanks everyone for great comments. I’m really learning how my body works through so many sources. I’m cutting down on bad stuff one at a time, and I think that alone is doing some changes on my body. I’m not losing the weight rapidly, but I have more energy overall.

Posted on April 13th, 2008I was thinking 500 calories sounds a lot but then when I thought about it, its about the same as 2 chocolate eclaiers with cream in the middle.
Matts right you should also try and increase your metabolic rate through exercise.
