One of my previous posts about the "Inside Brookhaven Obesity Clinic" program (TLC's TV program) attracted many visitors who were looking for their contact information.

Commented on November 29th, 2007My name is Nakeisha Robinson and I am wanting to acquire information about your program. My mother is about 450 lbs and i remain her primary caregiver. She has a plethra of medical problems that all stimulate from her weight. We seen the show and she was really interested in the clinic and the programs that you all employ to help the obese. I am at my wits end and need some information about the clinic. What insurances are accepted, what do the diets include and exclude? it is my hope that you will contact me very soon..
Commented on December 27th, 2007I would like to volunteer some of my time to a particular patient
Commented on January 1st, 2008I was a resident at Brookhaven for 3 years and got out last july, at one point I had lost 80 pounds, but i had no support there, and they did not help me learn to break my food addiction, once you are there, there is no program at night when you are there, there are 2 dietician classes a month, 2 group therapy classes a month, if you are infirmed enough you get physical therapy everday, otherwise, it’s 3 days a week physical therapy, when I finally left they did start putting jello in the refrigerator on the obesity floor at night for us to snack on, but most of the weight I took off was from walking on the boardwalk a block and a half a way, but now they don’t give out passes, and patient stays are limited, I was there when the documentary was being filmed, it’s a fantasy, beware, I have had too many friends die there.
Commented on January 9th, 2008Todd, thanks for your comments. Those things are what we need to hear. I had my doubts when I watched the documentary, but I’m sure people line up to get into there because there aren’t many places where people can support each other with smiliar problems. I think that alone might worth more than what is actually done there.
Commented on February 10th, 2008Phillip, and Draya, to get more information about them, you should contact them directly. I’m just giving out the contact information. I’m not affiliated with the clinic.

Commented on June 13th, 2008Just saw both ’07 shows. “Unsafe for surgery” and “Rescue Me” Have a million questions/ Is this place in any way connected with Brookhaven Labs out in Suffolk County? These morbidly obese patients depicted obviously don’t, can’t work for a livng. Where do they get all the money wuth which to feed their enormous appetites? Who pays for all this treatment? One young man, refusing to stop eating even while in bed in the clinic, as it seems with many others, is able to get food smuggled in to him? People actually bring foor in to these poor souls, who have completely ‘out-of-control’ food addictions. What give with such shenanegins INSIDE the clinic itself. And I see absolutely nothing said about the obvious presence of serious emotional disturbance in ALL of these ‘patients’. They seem to content thenselves with treating the symptoms here rather than get to and root out the causes of their eating problems and lack of self-control,and thoroughly analyze each person to help them understand hwy they can’t stop eating. Am I missing something here? Is this a respectable clinic that’s been vetted by the Medical Community or is it just another black hole for whatever money they get for the ‘efforts’ they make to help these people. I feel like calling them and either trying to speak directly with this Dr. Kolman and ask him to answer these questions, or ask for his e-mail affress so I can ask him online. I’m still stunned, and probably shouldn’t be, at how wasily these folks were/are able to cheat right under the noses of the people who are supposed to be helping them. Anyone want to get in on this? Vince
Commented on June 16th, 2008I heard you rescue obesity people. What are some requirements for your program? Do you have programs that can be done from home?
Thanks
Commented on June 16th, 2008Theresa, NY
I watched this documentary last night and as a person who
has struggled with weight all my life, I was confused.
Currently I have my weight under control through positive thinking, a very well balanced food intake and plenty of excersize. It is hard losing weight. There are not easy answers or ways out. I realize it is a very emotional issue, trust me. But it comes down to how you value yourself and the life you have been given. It has helped me a lot to know that there are people who have embraced life to its fullest and their lives have been cut short due to illness or any other unexpected death, these people would have traded anything to have the life we eat away. My email is starsoul08@gmail.com if you would like to chat about some of the ways I got it and keep it under control.
Good luck to all of my friends that suffer from eating disorders and know it is in your control.

Commented on September 19th, 2008Holly
I have watched several of the shows about this clinic, and I feel this is just a money making scheme for the owners of this place. If you were in th e hospital for high blood pressure they would not put you on a diet that contains salt, and would make sure your visitors did’nt bring this to you. I’m sure most of these people are paying or someone is, not the clinic and what is the point if they let people order take out food. If they can pay nine thousand dollars for a wheel chair for a patient that DOES NOT ADHERE TO THE RULES AT ALL, then maybe they can put that money to use with a gaurd at the door to stop fast food coming in. Don’t tell me they can’t stop this, I’m sure there is a way to watch the doors, and I don’t believe these delivery people sneek food into the windows., If they do then there should be a way to stop these deliveries. I think if there is no morbidly obese people then the clinic would have no reason to be there..therefore they need patients. And where do these people get the money for all this food? I think if you have an morbidly obese relative or friend, then you shouldn’t be allowing this to continue by helping them. I think Dr. Kolman is making a lot of MONEY off these people and his intentions in my opinion is not for the best for these people.. Where are the sucess stories. I have never heard one yet.
Commented on September 21st, 2008This place should be checked out, but I’m sure that is not going to happen. If you are thinking of going to this place please check out all the options firs..

@Kaye
I also agree that you should visit the place in person before you make any decision. But I do not agree that they should guard the door. That would not do any good. Their intention is to help people to change their behavior, not the symptoms.
I remember a specific episode where they explained why they are not guarding the door to stop the outside food. Stopping their behaviors against their will doesn’t do any good. Some will fail and some will succeed.
The Brookhaven is there to provide the environment where people can successfully lose the weight with proven system. But they will never be able to make choices for their patients.
Commented on September 22nd, 2008My sister was admitted to Brookhaven in September. She was horrified. She was left in bed unable to move without assistance she was left to deficate in a diaper why don’t they show this on the series? She is now in a Hospital in Yonkers and we are waiting for her to get well enough for her to go back to another obesity clinic.
Commented on October 3rd, 2008@Debi,
Commented on October 3rd, 2008That sounds horrible. Can you tell us more about your sister’s story? Can you also tell us how she got into the Brookhaven? I think many of our visitors are looking for that information. If your sister had a such horrible experience there, the story would help our visitors to make wise decisions. Please help us :)
Why do you have to be a resident of New York to go to Brookhaven Obesity Clinic? I think that is unfair. Are you saying that the rest of the world or at least the U.S don’t need the kind of help that you all offer? Well, do you at least plan on building other places like yours around the country?
Commented on October 20th, 2008@Paul,
Thanks for pointing that out. I had no idea that you have to be a resident of NY to be considered in to Brookhaven.
I’m sure there are other facilities around the US that has similar programs. We really need to search for those one. Why don’t we go ahead and do that. Let’s find other places similar to Brookhaven and list them here.

Commented on January 1st, 2009I had gastric by-pass surgery 6/07 I have lost 170 lbs. but have had 3 surgeries, suffered from malnutrition, at one pointI dropped to 98 lbs.In my state, you only have to see a nutritionist and mental health one time to qualify for this surgery, you need much more, you may trade one set of problems for ones that may be much more life threatening. The issues you face are just as difficult and you are forced to change your eating habits, and cause yourself great pain and damage if you dont. You also have to to take vitamin , mineral, protein, supplements every day, usually in liquid form. It is 01/09 and I can only eat three bites of food at one sitting ,I have to grind my meat, and can only eat soft foods, and those are very limited, I cant eat fast foods, solid foods, fish, pork, cake, cookies,or icecream, unless its dairy free. I assume every case is different, but i have met many people with the same issues and worse than mine. You can also regain the weight if you cant conform,a lot of these issuses can cause death just like obesity, and you may trade one set of health problems for more dangerous ones. So get in a support group, get on a good life style change plan ,get a nutritionist, exercise, find out the root cause of why you over eat,and keep trying,I wish I could go back and do it the natural way, but there is no reversal to by-pass surgery by the way, so good luck to all,and talk to someone because the depression i suffer now is far worse than i ever suffered when i weighed 300 lbs.
Commented on January 1st, 2009We need a support group for gastric by-pass survivors.
Commented on January 1st, 2009I’m 27 years old. I weighed 389lbs at the age of 24. I had been overweight all my life and decided to have gastric bypass surgery in 2005. It was the best choice I ever made. Before my surgery, I was told I would never have children, I’d end up with diabetes along with my mother, and have other comorbidities. Since then, I’ve lost 217 lbs and kept it all off and have a beautiful son. Gastric Bypass isnt for everyone, and it wont change the way you think or feel about food or yourself…but if you follow the diet you should and exercise properly…it can really change your life. Its not a quick fix..and it IS possible to screw it up. Its a lifelong battle.
Commented on January 2nd, 2009I am obese,350lbs.This is the biggest I’ve ever been & the most miserable.I went to a local hospital for info on lap band surgery. After getting info,& learning that you have to change your eating habits after surgery & the pros & cons,I started praying for God to help me make the right decision 4 me & my health.I was awakened one night & had the answer & I knew immediately the Lord was speaking to me.IF you have to make all these changes in your diet & can’t eat but small amoumts of food etc.. why can’t you do it without surgery. What do you need the surgery for if you gotta make all these changes afterward? just make the changes & don’t put your body thru surgery.Depend on God & a support group & a good Dr. to monitor your goals.I’ve lost 30lbs.& its been slow but I pray & when I go to the Dr. if I haven’t gained any, whether I lost a lb or not,I don’t give up & I go on.I have alot of health probs, but if I lose more weight I can come off all meds. What I’m trying to say is, it’s a mind thing & you have to gain self control of your own body again.Rely on God & believe in yourself. Why have surgery when u can make changes without it? God bless each suffering with obesity,I KNOW how u feel & if u haven’t been there u don’t know.

I agree that they shouldn’t guard the doors either but they should take away their cell phones so they would have to go out in the hall somewhere far from their room to call to try and get their take away. That might help some ;)
Commented on March 25th, 2009Try the South Beach Diet. There’s a 99.99% that you will succeed in your weight loss… that’s all I have to say.
And I’m talking from experience.
Commented on March 25th, 2009In Nov. 2006 I weighed 580. Today I’m 556. Between then and now … the lowest I reached was 506. I keep wanting to do this myself … without the aid of surgery, but I feel like I’m running out of time. I can’t get my head right.

Commented on March 26th, 2009I am 18 years old and weigh 330 pounds and keep gaining and I can’t seem to lose any weight. I have tried just about every diet and nothing seems to work. Does Brookhaven have certain requirements in order to be in their clinic?
Commented on March 27th, 2009Wow! I am a mother of a morbid obese son…unsure what he weighs at this point. Possibly 400 (+)?? He is 24 yrs old, has never held employment, has social anxiety and is going down a self destructive path of over eating…It scares me everytime I see him and know his life is short if he doesn’t do something soon.. What is a mother to do? Where can I go to find support to him and myself? He seems to be in denial and very defensive. Does not want help? Unsure what to do? I am looking for options…he has no health insurance…that frightens me even more…looking for any direction someone can give me…desperate mom.

Commented on April 11th, 2009hello im 22 years old and i live with my father , stepmother and my 10 years brother in the state of connecticut. I really do need some help with my weight you see in the year of 2002 i was diagnoised with Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)
Commented on April 19th, 2009Supraventricular (originating above the ventricles) tachycardia (SVT) is a series of fast atrial heartbeats that can cause the heart to contract at rates of 250 times per minute or faster. SVT can be uncomfortable and frightening. The type of treatment depends on whether the electrical impulses reenter the atria via a bypass tract (Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome), through the atrioventricular (AV) node, or are caused by a single abnormal group of cells. and i was also diagnoised with
Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome and having this makes my life alot harder.I lost weight more then once but i can’t never keep it off.I weight about 400 to maybe 500lbs right now i need to know how can i get into this clinic and if possible can you sen me all the information i need to get in . Thank You !!!!!!
Hi. I am a 49 yr old cancer survivor. My husband of 1 12 yrs walked out on me almost as soon as I was diagnosed almost 4 yrs ago. Since that time, I have put on 50+ lbs. I am only 5’2 and want to nip this thing but I can’t. I do not have the money for surgery, for counselling, for anything. I am addicted to food. I need help and I am crying out. If there is a package of 8 ice cream sandwiches, I can’t go to sleep until they are all gone. Same with a box of cookies, bags of chips, etc. I have severe back problems. Please help me
Commented on April 30th, 2009This message is for Sharon. I read your message and felt so connected to you. I have been ‘goggling’ all week on “how to make online friends”, “how to meet obese people on line”. Like yourself, this is the heaviest I have ever been and honestly, I do not have a single friend. That is so hard to admit because it makes me sound like more of a loser. But I just can’t believe there isn’t one person that is my friend that I feel comfortable talking to. I would love to start some sort on network, that is FREE and for people who honestly just want to talk sometimes. Anyone out there??

Commented on May 26th, 2009In response to Kay who wrote …”
I am a mother of a morbid obese son…… …looking for any direction someone can give me…”
Kay, the biggest thing is this…do not enable him. When he asks for you to run out for fast food, say NO. Cook him something, say NO. Anything that would contribute to him being overweight, say NO. He may have a temper tantrum. Let him. Don’t budge. Is he is able to get out of bed and you think he may hit you, LEAVE. And then call the cops. DON’T enable him by making excuses for him. If he stinks, give him soap and a pan of water. Or even baby wipes. Let him wash himself. If he can’t reach private areas, give him a washcloth secured to a long wooden spoon with an elastice rubber band. There ARE ways he can do it himself. If he still can’t do everywhere, then see is you can get a home health aide to do it. (he must be on disability, right?) Long story short, take care of yourself, not him. Eventually he will learn that he has to take the responsibility to do it himself. he really needs a rude awakening. He will probably hate it, but it will surely open up his eyes that HE has to lose weight, not control you.

Commented on June 4th, 2009I don’t know whether to be blaming the patients or the facility. Of course, there is no incentive for the facility if the patients lose weight or not because they will get paid either way. The patients are just as lazy and have as much lack of willpower after they stay for YEARS so why are they there??? Shouldn’t they be thrown out if there is no progress in their “weight-loss” regime?? The facility should fill the beds with people who are serious about losing the weight. I’ve seen the whole series and there aren’t many success stories because they allow cheating and laziness. If I were an administrator and had to be accountable of this program, I would not want to provide any statistics either.
Commented on June 7th, 2009I need help with losing weight.I weigh 325 my weight is supposed to be 160 PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!
Commented on June 7th, 2009I have lost 160lbs. I didn’t lose it fast but I made a lifestyle change so it will last. I still have about 70lbs to go. I found the most important thing is to have a big enough why. One that is not medical. Mine was to first have an active life with my grandchildren. But then it change to me having an active life for me. I just turned 60 and this is the lightest I have been in 25 years! It’s not luck it is desire!
Commented on October 4th, 2009I am so happy to find this page as a morbidly obese female, I have always felt like I have never belonged. I was at my peak 654 lbs with failing kidneys and a fatty liver, I am now 403 lbs. I have always wanted to be thiner, to find the quick fix. I tried medication, weight watchers, Jenny Craig… You name it. I am so proud of everyone here. Admitting that obesity is an adiction to food is the most powerful step ever. I know for myself that it beat 243 lbs of my weight.
I want to just share with all of you some of my battle and share ideas. No one understands what it is to be morbidly obese unless they were at one point. That is why I hated diet programs.
Keep strong. Stay focused.

Thank you, Stephanie
Commented on October 7th, 2009I have watched your program twice in the past two weeks and have a suggestion for the very patient physician who is treating these people whose lives will end for sure if not controlled. Dr. (I’m sorry,I didn’t catch your name) How about placing a guard at the door who will monitor the guests who come in to the point of checking their pockets etc. The relatives who bring in these extra foods are defeating everything you are trying to do. I’d make it a rule, and have each patient sign a form agreeing to this prior to admission, or be evicted. I’ve had a bit of psychology and know that until the enablers are removed or restrained, your program will fail for many of these patients. My heart goes out to all of them. In fact, I cried the first time I saw the program. However, they must assume the responsibility for their health and life before you can do anything. Sincerely, Kay Cannon
Commented on October 8th, 2009I pray for all obese or ‘compulsive overeaters’, as I am. I’ve been MAINTAINING a 120 lb. wt loss for 20 years! I am a FOOD ADDICT. I’m astounded you do not address the emotional/mental disorder of ‘eaters’. The obesity epidemic goes way past nutrition/food plans! It is right up with alcoholism. The medical community has, long ago, got the handle of alcoholism. Why can’t so called ‘eating disorder’ clinics get the same message? It provides ‘false hope’. I come in contact with beriatric surgery patients. They lose the weight, and then turn around and begin to gain it back. A wise/enlightened surgeon said it all. He said ‘I fixed your stomach, not your mind. The disease of food addiction begins in the mind!

Commented on December 1st, 2009Hello all. I am 45 years old and have been heavy most of my life. I am once again…on a diet. I would like to correspond with someone who is trying to lose weight. I feel I would relate better with someone that has just as much weight to lose as I do and someone around my age. I weigh 320. I just want to talk to someone who knows what I’m going through. Thanks.
Commented on December 14th, 2009you do not have to be a resident of new york to go to brookhaven bariatric clinic, i actually went back for a 2nd stay, because of the tlc doc, you are now limited to a 3month stay, so if you have to lose alot of weight, be forewarned, you will not be able to stay at brookhaven long enough to lose all the weight you need to lose, there are still plenty of people ordering food from the outside, mostly out of boredom and convincing themselves that they cant stand the food at brookhaven, again, brookhaven will not cure any food addiction, you will lose some weight but you would lose the same amount at any nursing home, if you were restricted to the nursing home diet of around 1500 calories, I hope this helps you folks
Commented on January 4th, 2010Hi all I am Dan fr uk I used to be 26st 5lbs in weight and I had numerous of problems due to my obesity I yoyo dieted all though my life since I got bullied and sexually abused at a residential college as a young adult but I don’t want to go into a long story about it as it left emotionally disturbed for yrs and yrs until a social worker finally listened to what happened to me and we went to the police whom took my case seriously but it was to many years on to take legal action against him but I did manage to him on the at risk register and the sexual abusers list the police hold on abusers I didn’t get justice but at least I have protected others fr being abused by that animal but I got bigger as years went on to the extent I was at deaths door quite litrualy as I had 3 bouts of deep vein thrombosis 2 on the legs and one on the lung which nearly killed me I knew then I had todo something I went to see my local GP whom referred me to a barbaric surgeon whom was really great but he put a spanner in though as he told there was no funding in the nhs fr anyone fr my area but other parts of uk they had no probs I frought fr one long year and I had to go my local press and went on national tv too in the uk why should obese should have the right to surgery on the nhs and why should we have the right to live from getting fat though our neglect but the journalist was ignorant and so was the producer of was too total idiots in my opinion they did realise that certain conditions can be caused by obesity and though disabilities too which surprised them. After being interviewed the show ent the following week and it got a good reception but one important thing angered me alot which I think was too anger people purposely by saying the operation costs the nhs £12.500 where in fact 2 years ago it only costed £4.500 per op and within 4 years of that person having the op the operation will repaid as every patent having gastric bypass ops would virtually will need nill medication so thats how the nhs get their money back. Also its the only operation the nhs get any finachual return on so I put this information to my local mp whom is a pain in the derryaire but he checked the facts I give him and then he put it our pm at the time why was not our county but everyone else was getting funding for weightloss surgery and not our county he then granted a yrs funding instantly for whom needed the op that year. now I am seen as some sort of a god as I got funding I only used common sense and knew which button’s to press to get the right attention thats I am human being that knew how to help myself and others as I also cerebral palsy too. now after my op 2 yrs ago I weight 10st 5lbs and I feel reborn I still have limitations but I can do some things I never been able todo like pull my trousers on, too wearing jeans, too wearing nice clothes too. But like other gastric bypass patients I will have to take vitermins for the rest of my life which I accept but its nothing to compare to risk losing my family I love. so to people whom are thinking or whom are doubting to have the op do it because it will set you free even if you have disabilities you were born with it will set you free still I promise love too all Danxxx

Commented on May 30th, 2010I am 48 years old and totally honest when I say I have absolutely no clue what my weight really is. I am quite sure it is over 400 pounds. My problem is that I don’t consume enough calories to maintain and loose the weight. Most days I live on one can of New England Clam Chowder and maybe a roast beef sandwich once a week. I don’t eat bread ~ only the one sandwich a week, I don’t eat junk food, I don’t eat fast food and with diabetes I do eat everything “fresh” as in fruit and veggies. No canned No frozen. I have become unable to wander through the grocery store, I don’t get much exercise at all due to having Neuropathy which severely limits my mobility. I do have medical insurance. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get some much needed help??? Please feel free to send me an Email … amylynn.evans@yahoo.com
Commented on May 30th, 2010I have been watching ur program..I will say I totally admire U and ur staff, who have taken on so much to reach out to these people who are morbidly Obese…I use to weigh 330…I had tried everything, every diet program on this earth…I eventually did Have the gastric bypass and lost 180 pounds…that was 9 yrs ago and I have still kept it off,as I promised myself never to be that fat again…I understand how these people feel and what they are going thru…BUT I will tell u that it really pisses me off that these CHEATER have no respect for u and ur staff and the work and help ur trying to give them..These CHEATERS are taking up bed space for someone who would follow the program and use the tax dollars the rt way. U need to change the policy 3 strikes ur out..U didnt make them reach the weight that they come to u, they did it to them self and it has to be them that want to make the change, If they are not ready to change it will never happen…And for that Micheal H.,OMG where does he come off feeling humilated bacause the 5 people where trying to help him out of his home..He should have thought about that long befor he got so dam Big..and Tammy the gastric bypass is only a tool,IT IS N A FIX..u still have to watch ur calories and maintain a healthy eating program and u still have to workout..If u dont o these thing,U CAN still gain the weight back..out of 10 people in my group who had the gastric b y pass I am the only onw that hasnt gaied the weight back.
Commented on May 30th, 2010I Praise the Director and his Staff for being their for these people, and i lite a candle for all those who have followed thru on the program and is continuing reaching their goals…For those that Cheat and complain,I just hope u watch the program and open ur eyes to how disrespectful u are to yourself and those that are trying to help u…

Commented on June 14th, 2010Hello everyone. I just found out some news about Brookhaven Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. The facility is actually a nursing home which is 3-stories high. Maximum stay is 90 days. The 3rd fl. caters to the obese patients. You’re not allowed to leave the premises and family members aren’t allowed to bring you food. Since i’m a severe agoraphobic, my mother visited the facility which is approx. 45 min away (driving distance) from my residence. BRHCC is not the only Bariatric Wellness Program in New York. There are 4 others. (1)Golden Gate Rehabilitation & Health Care Center: 191 Bradley Ave., Staten Island, NY 10314 (718)698-8800 (2)Avalon Gardens Rehabilitation & Health Care Center: 7 Route 25A, Smithtown, NY 11787 (631)724-2200 (3)Split Rock Rehabilitation & Health Care Center: 3525 Baychester Ave., Bronx, NY 10466 (718)798-8900
(4)Park Avenue Extended Care Facility, 425 National Blvd., Long Beach, NY 11561 (516)431-2600. For further information please copy and paste this link:

I’m also morbidly obese (375 lbs.) and in need of physical and mental help.
Commented on June 16th, 2010I will continue to pray for all of you and God Bless!
Just a reminder. My mom said that BRHCC will take people up to 600lbs. Another thing: I tried contacting BRHCC by phone and by email countless of times. Not once did they return my phone calls or emails. My mom wasn’t to fond of Brookhaven, so i’m going to try Split Rock Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. It’s only 3 mins. driving distance from my residence.
